Nintendo Patents Playdate-Style Crank for Switch 2

Nintendo designed a Playdate-like crank for the Switch 2

It looks like Nintendo is exploring some interesting new accessory ideas for the upcoming Switch 2 console. A recently spotted patent from Nintendo Patents Watch reveals designs for a Playdate-style crank that could attach to the new Joy-Con 2 controllers.

This hypothetical crank accessory would magnetically connect to the side of a Joy-Con 2, similar to how wrist straps work. The idea is for the Joy-Con 2’s mouse sensor to track the rotational movement of the crank, allowing it to serve as a unique input method for games. Fishing games, or even mini-games within titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, immediately come to mind as perfect fits for such an accessory. However, knowing Nintendo, there’s always potential for much more unconventional uses!

Another related patent describes a similar setup for a clickable wheel. This could potentially enhance the Switch 2’s existing mouse controls, perhaps by adding extra resistance or friction, or by allowing for precise scrolling inputs.

It’s important to remember that these are just patent applications, and there’s no guarantee Nintendo will turn them into actual products. Still, these patents offer an exciting peek into the creative possibilities for the Switch 2. It suggests Nintendo might be embracing a return to the “goofy accessory” era that defined much of the Wii’s lifespan. While the original Switch saw some innovative cardboard creations with Nintendo Labo (from VR headsets to fishing rods), a crank could be just the first of many adventurous new accessories for their next console.
