Nintendo’s Virtual Boy Makes Surprising Comeback as Switch & Switch 2 Accessory
In a truly unexpected move, Nintendo delivered a nostalgic jolt during its recent Direct event: the infamous Virtual Boy is making a comeback! This time, however, it’s not a standalone console, but a unique physical accessory designed for your Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2.
Soon, members subscribed to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack will have the opportunity to purchase a physical replica of the mid-90s tabletop system. You’ll have two options: a durable plastic version or a more budget-friendly cardboard model. These accessories are essential, as you’ll need one to experience the stereoscopic 3D world of Virtual Boy games.
The long-lost Virtual Boy titles are set to start hitting the Switch Online + Expansion Pack service on February 17th. Get ready to dive into classics like Mario’s Tennis (the original system’s pack-in game), Galactic Pinball, Teleroboxer, Space Invaders, and Tetris. Nintendo plans to roll out 14 of these unique 3D experiences over time, which will bring most of the Virtual Boy’s original, albeit small, library of 22 games to modern players.
For those unfamiliar, the original Virtual Boy was a bold but ultimately short-lived experiment. It launched in 1995 but was discontinued just a year later in 1996 due to poor sales and a reputation for causing some eye strain and headaches. Here’s hoping this modern iteration offers a nostalgic trip that’s a bit easier on the eyes!
