Atlassian Acquires The Browser Company for $610M, Betting on Dia AI Browser

Atlassian is buying Arc maker The Browser Company for $610 million

Big news in the tech world: The Browser Company, the innovative team behind the Arc browser and the upcoming AI-centric Dia, is being acquired by Atlassian. The deal is valued at approximately $610 million in an all-cash transaction, expected to close by the end of the 2025 calendar year.

Despite the acquisition, The Browser Company states it will continue to operate independently, focusing on the development of Dia. A private beta for Dia began in June, and the company plans to accelerate its rollout to “every platform faster than we could have previously imagined.” While active development on the well-regarded Arc browser has ceased, Arc and Arc Search will remain available, with long-term plans to be revealed soon.

Co-founders Josh Miller (CEO) and Hursh Agrawal (CTO) will remain in their leadership roles. In a blog post, Miller explained that joining Atlassian will allow them to accelerate their ambitions. He noted, “We chose Atlassian because their strengths complement our gaps. And most importantly, like us, they believe the browser is becoming the new operating system.” Miller also highlighted three key conditions for the acquisition: ensuring independence, securing all team members’ jobs, and keeping Dia’s vision central. He emphasized shared values played a crucial role in their decision.

Atlassian, a leader in productivity and enterprise services with products like Jira and Trello, shared its vision for this strategic move. Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes stated in a video announcement, “Our vision is to make Dia the AI browser for work.” He described Dia as being “optimized for the SaaS apps where you spend your day; packed with AI skills and your personal work memory to unleash your potential; and built with trust and security in mind, so you can bring it to the office. An AI browser for your system of work.”

This acquisition comes as Atlassian itself has been in the news recently. Last month, the company reportedly laid off around 150 workers, many in customer service, with plans to potentially use AI to take over some of those tasks. Now, with The Browser Company under its wing, Atlassian is clearly betting big on AI to redefine the work browser experience.
