Global Smartphone Output Surges Past 300 Million in Q2 2025
The smartphone industry is back with a bang! After navigating months of inventory challenges and sluggish demand, global smartphone production roared past the 300 million unit mark in the second quarter of 2025. This impressive milestone, reported by industry tracker *TrendForce*, signifies a robust recovery, showing a 4% increase from the previous quarter and a healthy 4.8% jump compared to the same period last year.
What fueled this resurgence? A key factor was a strategic subsidy program implemented in China. By targeting mid-range and entry-level devices, this initiative helped manufacturers significantly clear out excess stock. Not only did it revitalize the market, but it also provided a substantial boost to domestic Chinese brands, contributing to the stronger production numbers we’re now seeing.
Leading the charge, as often is the case, was Samsung. The South Korean giant produced 58 million units, securing its spot as the world’s top smartphone maker, despite a modest 5% dip from Q1 following its flagship launch cycle. Close behind was Apple, shipping 46 million iPhones. While this represented a 9% decrease quarter-on-quarter, it was a solid 4% increase year-on-year, driven by consistent demand for its iPhone 16e and aggressive price cuts in the Chinese market earlier this year.
Chinese brands made significant waves this quarter. Xiaomi, riding high on the back of the aforementioned subsidy program and expanding its reach into key emerging markets like South America and Africa, snatched the third spot with 42 million units. Oppo (including its sub-brands OnePlus and Realme) demonstrated an incredible rebound, increasing production by a massive 35% to 37 million units after a quieter Q1.
Further showcasing the strength of Asian manufacturers, Transsion (the parent company for popular brands like Tecno, Infinix, and itel) saw a remarkable 33% quarter-on-quarter surge, producing 27 million units. Vivo, along with its iQOO sub-brand, also had a strong showing, boosting its output by 8% to 26 million units.
