PTA Responds to Data Leak Reports: Not From Telecom Sector

PTA Responds to Reports of Data Leak From Telecom Sector

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has addressed recent media reports concerning the alleged availability of subscriber data online. The authority wishes to clarify that it does not hold or manage subscriber data; this information remains solely under the purview of licensed telecom operators.

An initial review by the PTA indicates that the reported datasets circulating online comprise various personal details, including family information, travel records, vehicle registrations, and copies of CNICs. This suggests the data has been aggregated from multiple external sources and did not originate from telecom operators themselves. The PTA further confirms that its audits have not identified any breaches within the licensed telecom sector.

In an ongoing crackdown against unlawful content, the PTA has taken action by blocking 1,372 websites, applications, and social media pages found to be involved in the sale or sharing of personal data. Moreover, the Ministry of Interior has formed an inquiry committee, which is actively investigating the matter.
