PTA Warns Against Surging Fake News, NSFW Content, and Unethical Material Online
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strong warning to internet and social media users regarding the circulation and promotion of illegal content on digital platforms. They’ve made it clear that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, using it to spread unlawful, immoral, or harmful material crosses a line and will not be tolerated.
The PTA emphasized that free speech does not extend to promoting content that offends religious beliefs, disrespects revered figures, or involves blasphemy. These acts are serious criminal offenses under Pakistani law, carrying severe penalties. Users were also reminded that provoking hatred against individuals or state institutions, such as the armed forces and national security agencies, is equally a grave crime.
The regulatory body highlighted a growing concern: digital platforms are becoming hotbeds for fake news, sexually explicit material, and content deemed unethical. Spreading such material isn’t just illegal; it also erodes public morality and disrupts social harmony. The PTA specifically noted that pushing false narratives, often disguised as activism or free speech, is a worrying trend that will be addressed legally.
The PTA underlined that all these prohibited actions are explicitly outlined as punishable offenses under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016. The authority reiterated its dedication to enforcing PECA’s provisions to ensure online discipline and protect national interests, warning that anyone involved in such activities will face prosecution.
To help uphold public peace and interest, the PTA is encouraging citizens to report any unlawful digital content they encounter via the PTA CMS mobile application. They concluded by urging all online users to exercise vigilance, responsibility, and caution in their digital interactions.
