Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 Delivers Key Upgrades for Budget Phones
Qualcomm has just unveiled its newest mobile platform designed specifically for more affordable smartphones and devices: the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4. This latest chip promises a noticeable boost in performance and features for budget-friendly handsets.
Compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 (which we’ve seen in phones like the Nothing 3a), the new Gen 4 chipset offers a 7% improvement in both GPU (Qualcomm Adreno) and CPU (Kryo) performance. The peak CPU speeds have also been bumped up from 2.5 GHz to a snappier 2.7 GHz, meaning a smoother experience for users.
Beyond raw power, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 brings better visual capabilities. It now supports WFHD+ displays, boasting a sharp 2,900 x 1,300 resolution and a fluid 144Hz refresh rate. This means clearer, more vibrant screens and smoother scrolling on more affordable devices. A big win for photography enthusiasts is the inclusion of the Low Light Vision feature, which was previously exclusive to Qualcomm’s premium chipsets. This will significantly improve video quality in challenging dark environments.
The new chip also retains several impressive features from its earlier iteration. You’ll still find AI-powered support for capturing stunning 200-megapixel photos, along with Qualcomm’s blazing-fast Quick Charge 4+ Technology, capable of juicing up a device from zero to 50 percent in just five minutes. Real-time translation and transcription across multiple languages also remain a core AI-powered capability.
While the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 is considered a minor upgrade from the Gen 3 (which itself was announced last August), it brings crucial enhancements to the budget smartphone segment. Qualcomm hasn’t yet announced which phone manufacturers will adopt this chip, but it’s likely we’ll see it appear in devices from brands like Honor and Vivo, who have previously utilized Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 series. This means more powerful, feature-rich smartphones will soon be available without breaking the bank.
