Spotify Lossless Streaming Has Arrived, Included Free With Your Premium Plan
Spotify Lossless Streaming is Finally Here – And It’s Included with Your Premium Plan!
After years of whispers, teases, and a long, long wait, it’s finally happened: Spotify is rolling out lossless audio streaming! And the best part? It’s completely free for all Premium subscribers. No extra charges, no hidden fees – just higher quality sound for your listening pleasure.
Think of it like this: your favorite music is about to get a major upgrade, delivering richer, more detailed sound that brings you closer to the original recording.
**Getting Started with Lossless**
The rollout begins today, hitting the US, UK, Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden. But don’t worry if your country isn’t on that initial list; Spotify promises lossless audio will reach Premium users in over 50 markets by the end of October.
Once it’s live for your account, you’ll receive a notification. You can enjoy lossless audio on your mobile, desktop, and tablet devices, as well as many Spotify Connect-compatible devices from brands like Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser. Support for Sonos and Amazon devices will follow next month.
**How to Enable Spotify Lossless**
You’ll need to activate lossless manually on each device you want to use it on. Here’s how:
1. Tap your profile icon in the top left corner of the Spotify app.
2. Go to Settings & Privacy.
3. Select Media Quality.
4. From there, you can choose to enable lossless audio for Wi-Fi and cellular streaming, and even for your downloads.
Once activated, you’ll see a special lossless indicator in the Now Playing view and the Connect Picker, so you always know you’re listening in top quality.
**Important Considerations: Data Usage and Best Experience**
Lossless streaming uses significantly more data than standard quality options. Spotify has included multiple settings for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads to help you manage your data usage and avoid any unwelcome overage charges. You can easily see how much data each quality setting (low, normal, high, very high, and lossless) will consume.
Spotify Lossless offers up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC streaming, meaning you’ll experience greater detail across almost every song available.
For the absolute best lossless experience, Spotify recommends streaming on Wi-Fi and using wired headphones or speakers. Why wired? Because Bluetooth technology currently doesn’t have enough bandwidth to support true lossless audio. If you stream lossless via Bluetooth, the audio signal will still be compressed before it reaches your ears. You might also notice a slight delay when starting lossless tracks, as your device might need a moment to cache the data to prevent any stutters.
**The Long-Awaited Arrival**
Gustav Gyllenhammar, Spotify’s vice-president of subscriptions, expressed the company’s excitement, stating, “The wait is finally over; we’re so excited lossless sound is rolling out to Premium subscribers.” He emphasized their focus on quality, ease of use, and clarity in developing this feature.
Indeed, it’s been a very long wait. Rumors of Spotify HiFi date all the way back to 2017, with promises of a CD-quality option in 2021 that never materialized. More recently, there was speculation that lossless would arrive in 2025 as a $6 monthly add-on. Thankfully, that’s not the case! Including lossless with the standard Premium subscription (currently $12) puts Spotify on par with competitors like Apple Music, which has offered lossless to its paid subscribers at no extra cost since 2021.
So, fire up your Spotify app, enable lossless, and rediscover your favorite tracks with incredible new detail. Now that lossless is finally here, we can only wonder: Spotify, what about Dolby Atmos next?
